HISTORY

Historical Introduction

An examination of the recent or more distant past of the Romani  population shows that Romani culture is one of an oral tradition, and that no written accounts of their internal experiences exist. Romani institutions are comprised of human beings, and Romani experience and knowledge have been passed from generation to generation without being recorded in books or other documents that we could use to research their history. They have not participated in political institutions, nor had they formed specific social movements or interest groups until very recently.

Therefore, the only available historical perspectives on Roma are based on accounts by non-Romani contemporaries who have transmitted a reality that is, to a greater or lesser degree, distorted. This is the case of the historical sources commonly used to produce historical works whose main sources of information are anti-Romani laws passed throughout Europe over many centuries. This situation would not be so problematic if the non-Romani authors of these documents had used Romani sources or simply asked Roma for their opinion and included them in their research projects. But this has rarely been the case. Examples of this actually happening are few in number and recent, unless there are examples we do not know about.

Therefore, given the fact that Roma voices have practically never been used until now, it should be kept in mind that much of the literature on this topic contains biased analyses.
